This finished shoe and assorted shoemaking tools and lasts come from the `Industrial Shoe Department` in the Kingston Penitentiary. In the 1950s and 1960s, the penitentiary had a number of small-scale factories where people engaged in woodworking, auto repair, printing, canvas sewing, upholstering, tailoring, and shoemaking. The shoemaking tools included battered and often improvised knives, awls, and pliers.
