Hello Friends, I hope you can join us for what will be an amazingly fun concert at one of our favourite venues on the planet, Trinity St. Paul’s Centre, 427 Bloor W, in Toronto. Friday Oct 30 at 8 pm.
We are serving up a feast of ragas, reels and rumbas from our new release, Subcontinental Drift, with sitar master Anwar Khurshid (Oscar winning Life of Pi, Love Guru), Special guests also include Ravi Naimpally on Tabla (Tasa), Québec dancer Genevieve Beaulieu, guest singers, and emcee Mary Ito from CBC’s Fresh Air.

Filled with ragas, reels and rumbas, Subcontinental Drift is Sultans of String’s fifth album, and features a special guest musician, sitar master Anwar Khurshid (famous for playing on Oscar winning film Life of Pi, and The Love Guru).
While we are known for spotlighting treasured special guests from around the world, this is our first offering where some of the songwriting was also done together. “There is something really magical about joining world music rhythms that we often play, but with pop sensibilities and forms and lengths, and blending that with the music of the East”, says bandleader/fiddler Chris McKhool.

Hi all! after ten years of playing with my good buddy Kevin Laliberté in various band configurations, we are finally doing what I have dreamed of for years, a DUO concert at our favourite club in Toronto!
This concert will be videotaped to make YouTube videos of our duo show. You will be a BIG part of the fun… Come and bring your friends and enthusiasm!
We also thought this would also be a great opportunity to support an arts charity that is very close to our hearts, ArtsCan Circle, and a portion of the proceeds from this concert are going to ArtsCan Circle.

New CD Fundraising Video!

SULTANS OF STRING are recording our fifth CD… with sitar virtuoso ANWAR KHURSHID. We are calling it Subcontinental Drift. In this special recording, Sultans of String meet the electricity of the sitar in an innovative collaboration that transcends categorization. Anwar’s sitar playing has been featured in Oscar-winning film Life of Pi and The Love Guru. Originally from Pakistan, Anwar now makes Canada his home, regularly collaborating with musicians from other genres.
Music has the ability to bring together people and cultures in a way that emulates what we love to see in the world, creating a collaboration that breaks down the barriers that divide us, and helping us to see our common humanity, and providing a model for peace.

Symphony! CD on the Official Ballot for the 57th Annual GRAMMY AWARDS!

We were notified today that Sultans of String has made it onto the Official Ballot for the 57th Annual GRAMMY AWARDS with our CD Symphony! (featuring special guest appearance by The Chieftains’ Paddy Moloney). It’s an honor to be placed on the ballot and we need your help to get into the Final Top 5 Nominees.
If you are a voting member of the Recording Academy, we ask for your consideration in voting for us. The Grammy ballots have now been sent to all voting members and must be received by the Academy by Wednesday, November 5. You can listen online here: http://www.sultansofstring.com/listen

I wanted to share this song I wrote as a proposal for my wife Catherine… We are both environmentalists, and we met at a composting convention… I was hired to sing environmental songs that day, and Catherine was the environmental representative at the London School Board at the time. We met over a composting unit, and our relationship just grew organically from there…”

Symphony of the Kootenays hosts a World Premiere!

Against the backdrop of southeastern British Columbia’s dramatic mountain scenery, the Kootenay region is one of the smallest populations in Canada to support a symphony orchestra. This weekend, the Symphony of the Kootenays, led by conductor Jeff Faragher, will present a world premiere event in Cranbrook, BC with acclaimed musician Chris McKhool and Sultans of String!
Chris McKhool’s FiddleFire! Program has long received rave reviews as an introduction for world music to young audiences. Never before has FiddleFire! been backed by a full symphony orchestra and McKhool’s Sultans of String bandmates. Rebecca Pellett was commissioned for three new arrangements of songs specifically for this show. FiddleFire! gets children and families dancing, clapping, laughing and singing songs in an energetic and eclectic mixture of world music. The show is presented in a dynamic, interactive way geared to engage youth. Now it’s ramped up with symphonic sound!
Show time is 2:00 pm Mountain Standard Time at Cranbrook’s Key City Theatre on Sunday Feb 2, 2014.
The Symphony is also playing with Sultans of String for adult audiences on Saturday February 1, 2014 at Cranbrook’s Key City Theatre.
