William Eugene Markman, 90, passed away on March 5, 2015. He was born on May 10, 1924, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Clarence and Grace Rathbone Bourdaghs. In 1928, Bill became a member of the Markman family upon the marriage of Grace to Milton K. Markman.
Bill grew up in Chicago, Illinois, and Fairfax, Virginia. He graduated from Fairfax High School in Fairfax, Virginia, in 1943. After high school, he joined the Army in June of 1943, serving both in WW II and the Korean War.  He attended college at Texas A & M and the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Education.  He went on to attend the University of Missouri at Kansas City earning a Master’s degree in Education.  Bill began his teaching career in the Shawnee Mission School District at Crestview Elementary and taught fourth, fifth and sixth grade until his retirement.
Bill married Joan Worthington in 1957 in Derby, Kansas. They were happily married for 58 years. Bill was a member of Overland Park Presbyterian Church. He was an avid history buff, who enjoyed reading, rose gardening, and visiting historic lighthouses.  He shared his joy of hot air balloons with area school children by building tissue paper models and launching them from the playground. Bill loved woodworking, model railroads, theatre, a good steak, and ice cream with a little chocolate sauce.  His family will fondly remember him as a ruthless card player, a master puzzler and a kind, gentle man who lived each day to the fullest.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Grace and Milton Markman, and his siblings, John (Esther) Markman, Virginia (John) Bracken, and Alan (Laurel) Markman.
Bill is survived by his spouse Joan, of Lenexa, KS; his son Richard (Colleen) Markman of Olathe, KS, grandchildren Tom (Annie) Markman of Ohio, and Tim Markman of New York.
